A Tesla destination charger, also known as a High Power Wall Charger (HPWC), is virtually the same as the device most Tesla owners have installed at home. As well as Tesla providing a unit to each new Tesla owner they also provide one, and sometimes two, complimentary chargers to approved businesses around the country.
The locations of the Tesla destination chargers will often have a mix of both but this is not always the case. Normally the rule is 2 Tesla chargers to 1 EV charger that means there would need to be 3 chargers + at the destination in order for a non-Tesla car to be able to use the station.
Destination Chargers can be configured in 13 different circuit breaker settings. These range from 15 amps to 100 amps and each amp level provides a different charge rate. The 15 amp setting charges at 8 km per hour while at 100 amps can charge up to 83 km per hour. You may also find a slower Destination Charger due to power sharing.
The main differences between Tesla Superchargers and Destination chargers are location, speed, and price. Superchargers have dedicated charging stations, while Destination Chargers are typically in hotels, restaurants, and other public places. Plus, Superchargers costs more but are much faster.
